University of Kelaniya 


This beautiful University is situated in Dalugama, Kaleniya facing the Kandy - Colombo highway. The university premises spread up to a vast area. There are a notable amount of infra structure, grounds and every single facility needed by an undergraduate to complete his degree as well as to improve his personality. Unlike other universities in Sri Lanka University of Kelaniya facilitates it's undergraduates to take additional courses which will help to achieve their passion.

1) Then : This great university was founded in 1875 by Ven. Rathmalane Dharmaloka Thero as the Vidayalankara pirivena. The Vidyalankara Pirivena was named as the Vidyalankara University in 1959, later the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon in 1972 and, finally the University of Kelaniya in 1978. The first female student was admitted in 1966 and the faculty of Science commenced on 1967.  The ragging in Science faculty came to an end in 1996, which has resulted the university to be more unique among the other universities of Sri Lanka. 

2) Now : The university has become the 3rd best university of the island due to its excellence performance in academics and extra curricular activities

The university is attaining it's excellence through providing a vast subject area and has introduced many novel subject areas to the undergraduates. There are 7 faculties which help to keep the pride of the Kaleniya high, namely;

The university also has inaugurated distance learning system and the e-learning methods proving to be an up to date education provider. The University also has given more concern on it's students and staff by establishing a career guidance unit, a staff development unit and a councelling unit comprising of much more experienced councellors in order to uplift their life.




There are 3 main institutes which go hand in hand with the university's education namely;

  • Postgraduate institute of Pali & Buddhist Studies

There are many student's clubs, associations and student's movements active inside the premises. These help the undergraduates not only to be successful in their academics but also to nurture their soft skills and develop their personality. I would like to conclude that this is one of the best universities in the island as mentioned above. Not a single student will worry once they come inside of the university. This university has changed the life of many undergraduates making them notable alumni in the history of the country and surely it will produce more and more useful personalities to build up the nation.

The Lava River We had some real fun because of the activity we got to do today. We were divided in to 4 groups 5 in each, and we were given round shaped card boards. The activity we were supposed to do was to cross the classroom from one end to the other using the limited card boards we had got, with all the group members while ensuring that non of us our feet touched the tile instead of  the card board. The task was really challenging because we had to work smart and hard making sure we were fulfilling the conditions. We tried our best to succeed, but unfortunately, our team couldn't cross the classroom successfully. Even this was  a small challenge, we learned lots of things through this challenge.   The Paper Tower & The Helium Stick  We got an awesome challenge on 13th of June 2018, by Mrs. Sarasi Senadheera, our lecturer for the subject GNCT. The task was to make a stable paper tower with a maximum height. The challenge was, we had to complete the task with a minimum number of resources and within a limited time. Before beginning the challenge we were divided in to 3 groups in which my group consisted of 12 members, including 2 girls and 10 boys. We were given 2 white papers, 4 color papers and a sellotape to commence the work. At first no one had a single clue what to do. Then all of us discussed and came up with a plan and we made a sketch on a piece of paper. Our main intention was to make the base stronger,so that it won't fall. All the members in the group were supporting the course and it wasn't very hard to complete the task within the given time. The girls were decorating the tower while others were cutting, rolling and pasting the papers....

The dining philosophers problem                                                    There are some Philosophers whose work is just thinking and eating. Let there are 5 (for example) philosophers. They sat at a round table for dinner. To complete dinner each must need two Forks (spoons). But there are only 5 Forks available (Forks always equal to no. of Philosophers) on table. They take in such a manner that, first take left Fork and next right Fork. But problem is they try to take at same time. Since they are trying at same time, Fork 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 taken by Philosopher 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 respectively (since they are left side of each). And each one tries to ta ke right side Fork. But no one found available Fork. And also that each one thinks that someone will release the Fork and then I can eat. This continuous waiting leads to Dead Lock situation So...
